FAQs: Common questions beginners have about starting Jiu Jitsu.

Gracie Barra Greensboro

What do I need to bring for my first Jiu Jitsu class at Gracie Barra Greensboro?

For your first Jiu Jitsu class at Gracie Barra Greensboro, bring a water bottle, easy on/off shoes (e.g., flip-flops) to avoid walking barefoot off the mat, and clean undergarments to wear beneath the Gi (like spandex, leggings, or a sports bra). Most importantly, bring a mindset ready to learn and have fun!

Will I spar or "roll" with others? I’m nervous about getting smashed as a Jiu Jitsu beginner.

Great question! Beginners will not jump straight into sparring. Instead, you'll be paired with an experienced training partner who understands how to help you learn safely.

Our classes are structured with a thorough warm-up, self-defense and sport Jiu-Jitsu techniques, specific training, and a cool-down. Techniques are practiced slowly, with control and little to no force. Specific training includes light resistance but is not full sparring.

At Gracie Barra Greensboro, live sparring ("rolling") is reserved for students who have earned at least three stripes on their white belt. This ensures you're confident in the fundamentals before entering live training.

Do I need to know any Jiu-Jitsu moves before my first class?

Don't worry about that! Our Jiu Jitsu program is beginner-friendly and designed to build a solid foundation. We follow a structured 16-week curriculum developed by Master Carlos Gracie Jr over the last 3 decades and so you can join at any time.

You'll be partnered based on size and experience. Typically, a higher belt “pulls the line” and pairs with someone less experienced. You'll stick with that partner during the class, and over time you'll have the opportunity to train with a variety of teammates.

I’m not as young as I used to be. Is it too late to start training Jiu-Jitsu?

Absolutely not! One of Gracie Barra's mottos is "Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone." Whether you're 4 or 74, it's never too late to start. Jiu-Jitsu can be adapted to your pace and physical ability, with modifications available when needed.

What should I expect in my first week of training in Jiu Jitsu?

When starting Jiu Jitsu classes, as with anything new, it's normal to feel a bit outside your comfort zone. This initial discomfort is a natural part of the learning process, and it will help you grow both physically and mentally.

While Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, safety is a top priority. Instructors emphasize control and technique over strength, and training partners are expected to protect each other. Most injuries are minor and preventable with good habits.

When people think of self-defense, they often picture a one-time seminar or a few basic moves. But real confidence and preparedness don’t come from a single class, they come from consistent training and mindset development. That’s exactly what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers. At Gracie Barra Greensboro, we believe that Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art. It’s a life skill, one that empowers everyday people, including professionals, parents, and even law enforcement officers, to stay calm, capable, and in control when it matters most. Whether you’re from Greensboro, Summerfield, Oak Ridge, or High Point, if you’re looking to get in shape, relieve stress, and learn how to defend yourself effectively, it might be time to give Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a serious look.
